FILIPPO JUVARRA

Juvarra, Filippo (1678-1736), Arquiteto italiano:

Basílica de Superga (1715-1731);

PIERRE FRANÇOIS-LEONARD FONTAINE

Fontaine, Pierre François-Leonard (1762-1853), Arquiteto francês:

Capela da Expiação (1816-1828);
Arcadas da Rue de Rivoli (1830), em Paris, na França.

Charles Percier (1764-1838) and Pierre François Léonard Fontaine (1762-1853) first met as architecture students in Paris. They studied the art and architecture of classical antiquity together in the French Academy in Rome during the 1780s and returned to Paris at the beginning of the Revolution.

Appointed by Napoleon architectes du gouvernement in 1801, their architecture and interior design work can be found in many of the monuments of Napoleonic Paris, including renovations to the Louvre and Tuileries Palaces, and in such grand estates as Fontainebleau, near Paris. In addition to their built work, Percier and Fontaine authored numerous books on architecture and design throughout their partnership, becoming the chief exponents of the French Empire style of decorative arts. Fontaine alone held official posts after Napoleon's fall and after 1815 Percier withdrew from active practice, instead teaching at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts until his death. Fontaine continued to work for government agencies until his retirement in 1848.

Pierre François Louis Fontaine (1798-1863), Fontaine's nephew, was a student of architecture under Percier at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris beginning in 1816. Fontaine won the Second Grand Prix de Rome in 1822 and traveled throughout Italy from 1823 to 1825 studying the monuments of Classical and Renaissance Italy. Upon his return to France, he made a career in the administration of the Palais Royaux, serving as architect for the palace of Saint-Cloud. Additionally, Fontaine designed private commissions, including buildings for the Ecorcheville family and for the chateaux at Hazeville and Théméricourt, and thermal bathhouses at Fontainebleau and Versailles.

JOHANN BERNHARD FISCHER VON ERLACH

Fischer von Erlach, Johann Bernhard (1656-1723), Arquiteto austríaco:

Igreja de São Carlos Borromeu (1716);

FELIX CANDELA

Candela, Felix (1910-1997), Arquiteto mexicano:

Palácio dos Esportes (1968), na Cidade do México;

ARNOLFO DI CAMBIO

Cambio, Arnolfo di (1232-1302), Arquiteto italiano:

Projeto da Nave de Santa Maria del Fiori;

FRANCESCO CASTELLI BORROMINI

Borromini, Francesco Castelli (1599-1667), Arquiteto italiano:

Palazzo Barberini (1625-1632);
Convento de San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane (1634) em Roma, na Itália.

The Italian architect Francesco Borromini (1599-1667) was the most daring and original architect of the Roman baroque, and his style is the embodiment of baroque extravagance. His works were influential throughout Europe and South America.

In the first half of the 17th century, Roman baroque architecture was dominated by two extraordinary figures: Francesco Borromini and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Borromini represented the more imaginative and idiosyncratic side of baroque architecture; Bernini remained much closer to the aims and ideals of ancient Rome, both in sculpture and architecture, and his architectural works are sober and classical.

Borromini's style was essentially personal and thus was later denigrated by neoclassic critics. For the 18th and 19th centuries Borromini was the most licentious and extravagant architect in history, and his works aroused the most passionate disapproval, particularly in Protestant Europe and America, while being copied (and occasionally exceeded) in Latin America as well as in southern Germany, Austria, Spain, and Portugal.

Francesco Castelli, called Borromini, was born on Sept. 25, 1599, in Bissone on Lake Lugano. He was distantly related to the great architect Carlo Maderno.

As a boy, Borromini was sent to Milan to learn the mason's craft, and it was as a mason that he went to Rome, where his presence is recorded from 1621. He probably began as an ordinary mason at St. Peter's, but soon Maderno, the chief architect of St. Peter's, seems to have found him employment at S. Andrea della Valle (1621-1623). In any event, it is certain that Borromini's years in Rome were spent as a humble craftsman, at the very time when Bernini was making his reputation as a virtuoso sculptor.

This was probably the cause of the lifelong rivalry between the two men, which was exacerbated by difficulties at St. Peter's and the Palazzo Barberini in Rome, where Borromini worked under Bernini from 1629 to 1632. The rivalry was such that it may have been the cause of the profound melancholia which eventually led to Borromini's tragic death.

In the 1630s Borromini began to receive independent commissions, and his fame grew rapidly. In 1632 he commenced work at the Palazzo Spada. His famous gallery, designed with an illusionistic effect of perspective, has an unexpected wit that must have helped to make Borromini's name known.

GIAN LORENZO BERNINI

Bernini, Gian Lorenzo (1598-1680), Arquiteto italiano:

Ampliação do Palácio Pontifício Quirinale (1656);

Early life and work
Bernini was born in Naples to a Florentine family and accompanied his father Pietro Bernini, a capable Mannerist sculptor himself, to Rome. Here the young prodigy's capabilities were soon noticed by the painter Annibale Carracci and by Pope Paul V, and Bernini could therefore begin work as an independent artist. His first works were inspired by Hellenistic sculpture of ancient Greece and imperial Rome he could study in the new seat.

Bernini's maturation into a master sculptor are evident in the Galleria Borghese
Under the patronage of Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a member of the then reigning papal family, young Bernini rapidly rose to prominence as a sculptor. Among these early works developed for the cardinal, were decorative pieces for the garden such as The Goat Amalthea with the Infant Zeus and a Faun and several allegorical busts such as the Damned Soul and Blessed Soul. In the 1620 he completed the bust of Pope Paul V. Scipione's villa chronicles his secular sculptures, with a series of masterpieces:

1) Aeneas, Anchises, and Ascanius (1619) depicting three ages of man from various viewpoints, borrowing from a figure in a Raphael fresco, and perhaps an allegory reflecting the moment when son attains the skill of his father.
2) Abduction of Proserpine, (1621-22) where the young artist creates a monument recalling Giambologna's Mannerist Rape of the Sabine Women, and masterfully dimpling the woman's marble skin.
3) Apollo and Daphne (1622-25) shows the most dramatic moment in one of Ovid's metamorphosis tales. In the story, Apollo, the god of light, scolds Eros, the god of love, for playing with adult weapons. Eros is angered and wounds Apollo with a golden arrow induces Apollo, upon sight of Daphne, a water nymph who had declared her perpetual virginity, to fall in love. Eros also wounded Daphne with a lead arrow that induces her to reject Apollo's advances. Apollo pursues Daphne. Just when he captures her she cries out to her father, the river god, to destroy her beauty in order to quell Apollo's advances. Her father responds by mutating her into a laurel tree. If representative sculpture of human figures metamophoses a person into a depiction in lifeless stone, this statue doubles the conceit, depicting in marble a life changing to inanimate tree, the moving woman freezing into a tree.
4) David (1623-24) by Bernini was a revolutionary statement in the history of art. The biblical youth is taut and poised to rocket his projectile. Famous Davids sculpted by Florentine predecessors to Bernini had been static after the event; for example, the triumphant reposed of the famous Michelangelo's David or the haughty effeteness of Donatello's or Verrocchio's Davids. The twisted torso, furrowed forehead, and granite grimace of Bernini's David epitomize Baroque fixation with dynamic movement and emotion over High Renaissance stasis and classic severity. Michelangelo expressed David's heroic nature; Bernini captures the moment where he becomes a hero.

PETER BEHRENS
